Meteora literally "in the air" "suspended in the air" or "high in the skies" is a famous locality located in northern Greece, on the northwestern edge of the plain of Thessaly, near the town of Kalambaka. It is an important center of the Orthodox Church, second in importance only to Mount Athos, as well as a renowned tourist destination, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988. Of the twenty-four monasteries built with enormous sacrifices on top of spectacular sandstone cliffs , currently only six are still inhabited, partially recovered after years of abandonment.
